MIAMI -- Theres something about the Philadelphia Phillies that brings out the best in Miami Marlins rookie shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria. Part of it is because he wants to impress his counterpart with the Phillies, Jimmy Rollins. Hechavarria drove in three runs, including the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, to help the Marlins to a 3-2 victory Wednesday night. The slick-fielding Hechavarria has a hit in eight consecutive games against the Phillies. "I dont know if its because Im facing Jimmy Rollins and maybe I want him to think that this youngster is good and has skills," Hechavarria said. "I have admired since Cuba as well as Derek Jeter." Hechavarria hit a two-run triple in the second before driving in the run that made it 3-2 on a fielders choice. Justin Ruggiano walked and Placido Polanco singled for his third hit in the eighth off Ethan Martin (2-5) before Hechavarria hit a grounder to Rollins, whose throw went wide of catcher Carlos Ruiz allowing Ruggiano to slide in safely. "Its nice to get on the other end of the one-run games," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond, whose squad improved to 21-35 in one-run games. Steve Cishek pitched the ninth for his 33rd save in 35 chances. It was Cisheks 28th consecutive save setting the team record previously held by Todd Jones in 2005. "I really just try not to think about it," Cishek said of the streak. "Id be lying if it wasnt on the back of my head. I was trying to go out there and get three outs. And try to get the guys with another win." Chad Qualls (5-2) got the final out in the eighth to earn the victory. Phillies starter Cole Hamels pitched six innings and allowed two runs. He struck out six as he reached 200 strikeouts (202) in a season for the third time in his career and the second consecutive season. "Its not really a big deal, 300 is probably pretty cool, but youre probably not going to see that anymore," Hamels said. The 2008 World Series MVP finished his season with a 3.60 ERA and an 8-14 record, which is the least amount of wins and the most losses in his career as he received one of the lowest run support averages in the majors. "Just being able to get 200 innings is ultimately a major goal every season," Hamels said. "To be able to achieve that I guess is sort of a positive note. I did everything I could that I could affect. Thats ultimately the learning lesson." Brad Hand allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings for Miami. Hechavarria hit a two-run triple in the second inning to deep centre field over the head of Cesar Hernandez for a 2-0 lead. Freddy Galvis, who had three hits, stroked an RBI single to pull the Phillies within 2-1 in the seventh, which ended Hands outing. Hernandez broke a 2-for-23 slump with an RBI single to tie the game at 2. "We had 10 hits and the two runs, a little power shortage right now with extra-base hits and home runs," Phillies manage Ryne Sandberg said. The bottom of the seventh featured two missed calls by the umpires as Rollins tag on a pickoff attempt at second base by Cesar Jimenez was in time to get Juan Pierre, but he was called safe. Then Jimenez applied a tag with his bare hand to get Christian Yelich out on a slow grounder. "I think it all evened out," Sandberg said. "One for them, one for us." Thats how the Ravens won when Ryan was their defensive co-ordinator from 2005-08, and that is precisely the formula Baltimore used to beat Ryans New York Jets on Sunday.CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Carolina Panthers can become the second team in NFL history to make the post-season with a losing record in a non-strike-shortened season.Coach Ron Rivera would prefer not to talk about that though.Rivera said he wants his players to focus on Sundays game against Tampa Bay — and not the convoluted NFC South playoff picture — following Carolinas biggest win of the season, a 41-10 victory in New Orleans that catapulted the Panthers back into the playoff hunt.In other words, forget what he said two weeks ago.Coming out of the bye, Rivera stepped out of character and openly discussed Carolinas chances of winning the NFC South if it could win out, hoping to motivate his players. Thats a mistake the fourth-year coach probably wont make again after the Panthers (4-8-1) got thumped by Minnesota, 31-13.Were facing Tampa — and we have to beat Tampa, Rivera said. The 2010 Seattle Seahawks made the playoffs with a 7-9 record. The scenario for the Panthers qualifying at 7-8-1 is not as farfetched as you might think. If the Panthers win their final three games — against Tampa Bay and Cleveland at home and Atlanta on the road — and the Saints lose one of their remaining games, the Panthers will repeat as NFC South champions.Carolina has renewed confidence following its first win in 63 days, a game that prompted a universal where did that come from? from an otherwise frustrated fan base.Thats not far from the feeling here in our locker room, centre Ryan Kalil said with a laugh. The dominating performance has given the Panthers new hope that maybe, just maybe, theyve started to figure things out.The Panthers scored on their first three possessions and jumped to a 24-3 halftime lead — and then seemed to take out a seasons worth of frustrations againnst the Saints on both sides of the ball.ddddddddddddhen you execute like that, its fun to watch and when you dont, its hard to watch, quarterback Cam Newton said after Sundays win. So as an offence, my job is to put up points any which way possible, and when the offensive line is playing as well as they did, and our running backs are running like they were, and our guys are catching the ball like they were, its hard to lose. The fourth-year quarterback had been in the worst slump of his career with nine interceptions and only six touchdown passes during the teams six-game losing streak. He broke out in a big way against the Saints, throwing for 226 yards and three TDs and snapping a string of eight straight games with an interception.Rivera attributed Newtons performance to recent stability on the offensive line, confidence from scoring touchdowns early, and offensive co-ordinator Mike Shulas decision to use the no-huddle offence early on.The no-huddle is something that worked well for the Panthers early in the season. When its on, we are pretty good at it, tight end Greg Olsen said. The defence, led by co-ordinator Sean McDermott and his staff, was brilliant, too, holding Drew Brees without a touchdown until the waning moments of the fourth quarter.Rivera said the danger now is looking ahead and not focusing on the task at hand. He thinks the Panthers might have got caught up in that earlier this year after going 12-4 last season and earning a first-round bye in the 2013 playoffs.I wouldnt be surprised because of the expectations, and the talk about it, Rivera said. We came off a good year and had some pretty good pieces in place. But the emphasis has to be dont look at who we play, dont look at the end of the race — just run the race. ' ' '
