DETROIT -- Jeff Bower is returning to the NBA, this time to join the front office of the Detroit Pistons. Detroit announced Tuesday that Bower had been hired as the teams new general manager, part of an off-season overhaul in which Stan Van Gundy was hired last month as the coach and team president. Bower was the coach at Marist College last season, but he resigned that position Monday. "Im excited to join the Pistons organization and play a role in helping this franchise build on its great basketball tradition," Bower said in a statement. "I look forward to working with Stan, his staff and everyone in the Pistons organization to put together a team that the community can support and be proud of. Im also excited about ownerships commitment to winning and their demonstrated commitment to the community." The Pistons called a news conference for Wednesday to introduce Bower. Bower has been a general manager and coach in the NBA, holding both those positions with the New Orleans Hornets in 2009-10. "Jeff brings great basketball knowledge and NBA experience to our organization and hes enjoyed success in building teams," Van Gundy said. "Hes a great evaluator of talent and Jeff will bring solid leadership to our front office." Bower was the general manager of the Hornets from 2001-03 and again from 2005-10. Marist went 12-19 this past season under Bower, which was a two-game improvement from 2012-13. "I have a lot of respect for Jeff and the job he did in his time at Marist," athletic director Tim Murray said. "He laid the foundation for the program moving forward and I feel that this is a great opportunity for our next head coach. I wish Jeff the best of luck as he leaves Marist for a very specific and compelling NBA opportunity." The Pistons went 29-53 last season, missing the playoffs for a fifth straight year. That was the end of Joe Dumars tenure as team president. Van Gundys coaching is well respected -- he went 371-208 in seven-plus seasons with Miami and Orlando -- but now hell have the added responsibility of handling personnel matters. Its rare for one person to have that much control in the NBA, so Bower may play an important role in shaping the franchises future. Its not career ending, its not season ending, nothing like that. So that was all positive. Im just going to continue to do the rehab Ive been doing with our guys and Im very confident its going to wake back up.Palmer said the doctor told him the chances were one in 100,000 of him falling on the shoulder in just the wrong way to put pressure on the nerve and shut it down.I can get tackled thousands of times, he said, it just happened that my arm was in the wrong position.Palmer has not officially been ruled out of Sundays game at Denver, but all signs point to Drew Stanton making his third straight start. The shoulder felt better a week ago so he did some throwing, activity that irritated the nerve again.I threw 20 per cent of what I typically throw as far as velocity is concerned, he said. I havent gone out there and just chucked the ball all over the field. Thats not what theyve told me to do.It was enough to cause his shoulder to regress. One of the things Ive learned is that nerves are very finicky and theyre very unpredictable, Palmer said. Its not like a sprained ACL where its a 2-4 week thing. Its just something where Ive got to continue to work and when its ready, its ready. He said this isnt a typical football injury. The doctor I saw yesterday sees them a lot in car accidents, Palmer said. So its not something thats just kind of run of the mill.He acknowledged being frustrated but said its his nature to have a positive attitude.ddddddddddddIm taking it one day at a time, Palmer said. Im coming in every day. Im the first in here and the last to leave every day. Im preparing that when it turns on, Im ready to go.Arizona (3-0) enters Sundays game as a touchdown underdog but as one of two unbeaten teams remaining in the NFL.Palmers shoulder was hurt when he landed on it while trying to run for a first down in the Cardinals 18-17 season-opening win over San Diego. Stanton, who had not taken a snap in a regular-season game in four years, came on to direct Arizona to a road victory over the New York Giants, followed by a home win over San Francisco. The team had a bye last week, and Palmer was hopeful that time off would allow him to be ready to play.Im just going to stick with the protocol and hope and pray that it wakes back up, he said. ... Weve tried everything. They (his doctors and trainers) have done a great job of doing research, calling different doctors all over the place, calling people all over the country, trying to find out if anybody has any information on it.He has tried dry needle treatment, deep-tissue massage and acupuncture. While he waits for the nerve to respond, Palmer said hes doing what he can to help the team.Im going to do everything I can to help guys around me, he said, to help Drew obviously, and Im always on the receivers and skill position guys during practice and in meetings, helping out any way I can. And Im going to continue to stay positive and be as influential as I can without getting in the way.___AP NFL websites: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
