Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Chubb put Georgia on his back in the Belk Bowl, rushing for a career-best 266 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries to lead the 13th-ranked Bulldogs to a 37-14 victory over No. 20 Louisville. Chubbs phenomenal performance, along with a defense that came up with three interceptions, enabled the Bulldogs (10-3) to overcome an injury to quarterback Hutson Mason and reach double-digit victories for the third time in four years. The standout freshmans yardage total was the second-highest single-game effort in Georgia history, and it came against a Cardinals defense that came in ranked third in FBS against the run. Mason completed 10-of-15 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown to Chris Conley prior to exiting near the end of the half with an undisclosed injury. Conley finished with 80 yards on four catches, but clearly played a supporting role on a night where Chubb was the unquestioned star. Kyle Bolin threw for 300 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-40 passing for Louisville (9-4), but was picked off twice. DeVante Parker amassed 120 yards on eight receptions in the loss, with Brandon Radcliff tallying 89 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts. Mason was on his way to a banner night as well prior to departing, with the fifth-year senior stepping up big with Louisville bottling up the Bulldogs potent ground game for much of the first half. He hit on four straight throws, including a 20-yard strike to Michael Bennett, early in the second quarter to position Marshall Morgan for a 41-yard field goal that snapped a 7-7 tie. Mason then converted a pair of third downs on Georgias next drive, finding Sony Michel on a screen for a 32-yard gain and later scrambling for six yards on a 3rd-and-4. Chubb took a handoff on the next play and bounced off several defenders en route to a 31-yard touchdown that extended the lead to 10 points with 6:40 left in the first half. Louisvilles Reggie Bonnafon was intercepted on the ensuing possession by Dominick Sanders, who zig-zagged 40 yards to the Cardinals 9 to set up Morgans 22-yard field goal for a 20-7 advantage. Georgias defense made the lead hold up by yielding just one sustained possession in a second half in which Chubb took over. With the Bulldogs pinned down on their own 3-yard line midway through the third quarter, the young back burst up the middle and broke loose from the Louisville secondary before finally being brought down on the Cardinals 15. Two plays after the 82-yard rush, Michel reached the end zone on a 2-yard carry that put Louisville in a 27-7 hole. The Cardinals were able to respond courtesy of Parker, who caught four balls for 70 yards on the following series he highlighted with a determined 21-yard catch-and-run to convert a 3rd-and-20. Radcliff powered in from six yards away on the next snap to give Louisville some life with 1:48 left in the third quarter. Louisville then stopped the Bulldogs on downs to get the ball back, but Damian Swann intercepted Bolins deep pass on the next play. The turnover led to Morgan knocking through a 41-yard field goal with 5:20 left. Brice Ramsey, who took over for Mason, had a 14-yard connection with Kenneth Towns on third down to place Georgia in range for the kick. Chubb finished off his record-setting night with a 30-yard scamper he backed up with a 8-yard touchdown with just over two minutes to go. Georgia marched 90 yards in eight plays on the games opening drive, which was kept alive by a personal foul penalty on Louisville that negated Masons third-down incompletion. The Bulldogs capitalized shortly afterward when Mason hit a wide-open Conley for a 44-yard touchdown on play action. The Cardinals answered with a 9-play, 84-yard sequence capped by Gerald Christians one-handed 11-yard touchdown grab, but failed to cross midfield over the remainder of the half. Game Notes Chubbs 266 yards was eclipsed only by Herschel Walkers 280 against Vanderbilt in 1980 for the highest single-game total in Georgia history, and shattered the Bulldogs previous bowl record of 163 by Garrison Hearst in the 1993 Citrus ...
