MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Uruguay striker Luis Suarez had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday but was expected to recover in time for the World Cup. The mother of the 27-year-old Liverpool striker told The Associated Press that Suarez had successful surgery to repair cartilage damage. "The surgery is over and thank God everything went well. What Luis had wasnt as serious as we thought," Suarezs mother, Sandra Diaz, told the AP shortly after speaking to him on the phone. "Hes very well. Hes going to play the World Cup," said Diaz, who was taking care of the strikers children while he was in hospital. The Uruguayan Football Association released a statement later saying Suarez began feeling an uncomfortable pain in his left knee during his last English Premier League game and he felt sharp pain again when he was training with the national team on Wednesday. An exam confirmed the cartilage injury. "This morning he underwent an arthroscopy to repair his meniscus. ... No other injuries were found in his knee," the association said. "His participation in the World Cup in Brazil is not ruled out." Suarez was released from the Medica Uruguaya hospital in the afternoon, and was taken in an ambulance to his home on the outskirts of Montevideo. He was in a wheelchair, but he walked the last few steps to his house leaning on the shoulders of two people, without putting pressure on his injured leg. His wife, Sofia, asked a small group of reporters to stop taking photos inside their home. When they continued to snap shots, Suarez, who was known for his short temper, called out a TV station by name, saying they were being disrespectful. Earlier in the day, he seemed calm about his recovery and confident he would play in the World Cup. "Take it easy, because Im going to make it (to the cup) and will work very hard these days to be at 100 per cent, and help out my teammates," Suarez told El Pais newspaper. According to Suarezs sister, the striker was expected to be out for 2-3 weeks. Uruguay plays its first match at the World Cup against Costa Rica in 23 days. The team face England five days later and Italy five days after that. "The problem is that these days he wont be able to play, and will only be able to do physiotherapy," Giovanna Suarez said. Suarez is expected to be Uruguays main threat at the World Cup. He had his best season with Liverpool, scoring a league-leading 31 goals, and was voted the league player of the year. He scored three goals at the 2010 World Cup, and four when Uruguay won the 2011 Copa America in Argentina. He was named player of the tournament. JOHNS, N.L. -- St. Johns IceCaps defenceman Ben Chiarots night went from despair to elation on Saturday, as his team beat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2 in overtime in American Hockey League action. Chiarot found himself on the end of a wide open puck just outside the slot with the third period winding down, but when he went to connect with the shot his stick exploded. Chiarot got a chance to redeem himself when he set up the game winner with 24.9 seconds left in overtime. "To keep this streak going, it feels great," he said, referring to the last nine games in which St. Johns has walked away with at least a point. "The boys are really excited." Adam Lowry scored the overtime winner, on a partial breakaway with a forehand-to-backhand move before hitting the backhand shot high, with 24.9 seconds left in the extra frame. Eric ODell and Andrew Gordon also scored for St. Johns (36-19-4). Scooter Vaughan and Aaron Ness scored the Sound Tigers (26-27-6). The teams combined for 48 penalty minutes, which shaped the way the game played out. "Not everyone gets out (to play)," Chiarot said. "Penalty killers dont usually play on the power play (and vice-versa). Depending on whiich way the calls are going, guys can get a little stuff on the bench.dddddddddddd It seemed to even itself out in the end and the guys stayed in it." Bridgeport opened the scoring 7:00 into the game through Vaughan, who smashed a one-time slapshot in from the point on the power play. ODell tied the game for the IceCaps at the 12:48 mark of the first, finding a loose puck in front after Jason Jaffray had wrapped around the net. Ness added a short-handed goal for the Sound Tigers at the 13:36 mark of the first, gaining the zone and sniping high blocker with a wrist shot from the slot. The IceCaps tied the game on a power-play goal from Gordon, who wired a slapshot from the point high blocker at the 5:36 mark of the second period. Gordons goal was the turning point of the game, according to IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge. "Our guys did a good job realizing it when we were down one goal," McCambridge said. "Andrew Gordons goal was a real big one for us to build some momentum. You have to give their goaltender credit, he was excellent at fighting through traffic." IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinson made 14 saves. Kevin Poulin stopped 33 shots for the Sound Tigers. ' ' '
